A woman has been jailed for stabbing two tram passengers during a terrifying daylight knife attack.

In front of shocked passengers and her toddler son Sandra Bell whipped out a blade and plunged it into a 14-year-old girl, Croydon Crown Court heard.

“The use of knives on the public transport system will not be tolerated by British Transport Police and a jail term in this case shows just how seriously the courts take these types of offences."

Detective Sergeant Darren Stenning

The 44-year-old mum, of Wingate Crescent, also struck pensioner Ronald Bartholemew, cutting his face.

The horror unfolded on a New Addington to West Croydon tram on August 31 last year.

The court was told Bell got into an argument with her young victim. After a struggle the teenager fled to the front of the tram and sheltered behind Mr Bartholemew.

But Bell followed and as her three-year-old son screamed in terror she pulled out a six-inch knife and attacked her two victims.

The hearing was told no one on the tram stepped forward to help and a number of men ignored what was going on.

The girl, who needed 13 stitches to her wounds, and Mr Bartholemew were taken to Mayday Hospital.

Gilles Bedloe, defending, said Bell had felt intimidated and that there was also aggression from the girl.

Bell admitted causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm and was jailed for two-and-a- half years.

British Transport Police Detective Sergeant Darren Stenning said: "This was a serious incident where two passengers were set upon by another passenger. One was a young girl and the other an older man who both suffered injuries in the attack. "The use of knives on the public transport system will not be tolerated by British Transport Police and a jail term in this case shows just how seriously the courts take these types of offences. "It is hoped that the young victim and elderly male in this incident can now move on from their ordeal."

Its amazing what rubbish the defence lawyers come out with. Even if the 14yr old girl was being slightly aggressive the point is the woman had a knife on her so intended to use it! This was a 44 yr old woman who had her child with her. She should be highly ashamed of herself. And these are the kind of people who are bringing up the next generation.....

That woman should be jailed for at least 5 years and then be denied access to her child, because she is not going to be a good role model to her child, it is a disgrace to think that a woman her age would carry a knife on her like that and then use is it to such force. And to be honest I don't really blame the other people for not stepping in, getting between a mad woman and a knife is a lot to ask.

This is precisely the reason why I will not use the Croydon trams. I have previously witnessed similar behaviour by these pram-pushing, fare-dodging benefit spongers. What a great future the numerous offspring of these 'model citizens' can look forward to!

From the reaction of her 3 year-old son, it would seem as if this isn't the first time she's done this sort of thing. If her lawyer had said she had a mental health problem, I could well believe it - but since he didn't, we have to conclude that she is plain evil - and not fit to bring up this kid. Who will look after him now?

Heck if this woman did have some Mental health thing, (which is a too common let off nowadays) then she should be on Medication and banned from having children, she is not fit nor able to controll her behaviour let alone raise a family.

having just been attacked by a knife myself, I cannot begin to tell you how terrifying it is. I hope she rots in jail & her son is adopted by some decent normal people.
