A 14-year-old girl told her family she loved them in a heartbreaking final message before hanging herself when her mum went out for a coffee, an inquest has heard.

Ashdon Muirhead, of Mersham Road, Thornton Heath, wrote "I love you, I miss you, you have the best life ever" in a note to her mum Patricia Hewitt before taking her own life on November 15 last year.

Mrs Hewitt told Croydon Coroner's Court she thought her daughter was "messing around" when she found her in the garage after returning just an hour later at about 1pm.

She told the inquest: "I tried to get her down. I said, 'Ashdon, what are you doing up there?'"

Police launched an investigation following the teenager's death after family members told officers she had been bullied.

Detective Constable Chris Francis told the court police visited Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College, where Ashdon was a pupil, to obtain records about her school life.

He said there had been "a number of disagreements" and "misunderstandings" between the teenager and her friends, while teachers had spoken of "some form of issue".

But he said: "There is no evidence of bullying."

Ashdon wished a friend a happy birthday on Facebook before killing herself, the inquest heard.

Her mother said: "She had family who loved her, she was just one of those children. She had so much love around her and she was a loving person. For her to do that, to me it makes no sense."

Coroner Selena Lynch recorded the teenager's death as suicide on Wednesday, concluding she had intended to take her own life.

She told Ashdon's family: "This is heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for your loss.

"Teenagers are often overwhelmed by strong emotions and find it difficult to see past those emotions.

"I sometimes wonder if young people who take their own lives realise how permanent it will be.

"Although Ashdon will not know it, her actions will have an effect on her families' lives in a profound way."

Addressing Mrs Hewitt, she said: "Please never blame yourself for what has happened. Remember Ashdon in happier times."
