So a school is banning the Sun newspaper from the staff room (Sunbelievable, June 10)?

I say congratulations to the management for stepping up and making a difficult and unpopular decision.

Red-top tabloids like the Sun have been systematically dumbing down the news agenda in this country, offering sound-bite articles with no substance instead of proper insight into the causes and reasons behind major issues that affect our lives every day.

I getthat some people would prefer to read something lightin their lunchbreak rather than the Financial Times or the Economist, and that is fine, there should be no obligation for teachers to be politically or globally informed –though I am sure most parents would hope they were.

The real issue here is that while skating over real issues, the Sun and other trashy titles focus their attention on celebrity culture and the importance of looks.

This is not the sort of thing our children should believe is worthy of their attention, and the teachers should know better than to endorse this view so publicly.
