More than 10,000 people turned out for the South End Food Festival, making it the most popular to date according to organisers.

With more than 70 stalls offering international cuisines, the annual one-day event held along a stretch of South End was opened by the Mayor of Croydon Patricia Hay-Justice on Sunday June 28.

Organised by South Croydon Business Association and the event also received support from Croydon Council, supermarket chain Lidl and the many restaurants along the road.

Alongside the food on offer, visitors could also enjoy live entertainment on two stages and a live cooking demonstration area, which hosted a show down between top chefs Malcolm John, owner of French restaurant Brasserie Vacherin and Malcolm Ozwaldo, Head chef of Peter Bagatti’s Italian restaurant.

Mr John claimed the crown with a dish of sea bass, clams and mussels followed by caramelised pancakes with New Zealand cherries.

Despite difficulties securing sponsorship to fund this year’s festival the South Croydon Business Association said it was determined to continue to stage the event.

Linda Arthur, chairwoman of the group, said: “The Festival has been a fantastic success – we rely on the support of the public and traders and our wonderful sponsors who have all helped to make this day possible.

"We will definitely be back next year - even bigger and better."
