A dry land “pirate ship” in the suburbs was just pipped at the post in Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces Shed of the Year.

Keith Brown, a greetings card business owner, showcased his galleon-style pirate shed up against a shed with a nightclub theme in Chobham, Surrey, a biker bar in Sussex and a distillery in the Scottish Highlands as part of the show, which aired on Sunday.

Mr Brown’s retreat is nestled behind a wall of trees at the bottom of his garden in Suffield Close, Selsdon.

The space features a bridge, an artificial waterfall, a dance floor and bar.

The dance floor and bar were completed two weeks prior to the competition.

Mr Brown built the shed himself with no formal training.

He has been building it for more than 25 years at a cost of about £20,000.

However, his efforts were not enough to claim the title of Pub Shed of the Year, as the Inshriach Gin Distillery was crowned the overall winner.

Its owner, Walter Micklethwait said: “I can’t believe we beat the pirate man because he was amazing.”

The Gin Distillery will now go on to the grand final.
