Croydon politicians both red and blue have reacted on social media to Jeremy Corbyn’s landslide victory in the Labour leadership race.

Once considered the rank outsider, Mr Corbyn won with 59.5 per cent of first preference votes, beating rivals Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall.

The announcement followed Tom Watson’s victory in the deputy leadership race.

Steve Reed, Labour MP for Croydon North, exhorted Corbyn to unite the party following the three-month leadership contest.

Mr Reed was one of 41 MPs to nominate Ms Kendall for the party leadership.

Ms Kendall finished last with 4.5 per cent of first preference votes. Mr Burnham finished with 19 per cent, and Ms Cooper with 17 per cent.

Timothy Godfrey, Labour councillor for Selhurst, was more emphatic in congratulating Mr Corbyn, and described the result as a “great day for the Labour party”.

On the other side of the aisle, Croydon Central Conservative MP Gavin Barwell suggested Mr Corbyn posed a “greater risk” to national security than any recent Labour leader.

Croydon Council’s opposition leader, Conservative councillor Tim Pollard, tweeted that he “couldn’t have asked for more from the result.

Other Croydon politicians also aired their views on the victories for Corbyn and Watson:
