Leatherhead badminton star Chris Langridge believes he and partner Marcus Ellis have what it takes to reach next summer's Olympic Games.

The pair are coming off the back of an impressive run at this year's World Championships in Indonesia.

A first-round win over Italians Giovanni Greco and Rosario Maddaloni set up a clash with eighth seeds Lee Sheng Mu and Tsai Chia Hsin.

The pair came through in straight sets before also dispatching of Danish duo Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding.

And, while they came unstuck against eventual champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, Langridge believes it a huge step in the right direction.

“At the moment we are in a good position,” he said. “But so much can change there is still so many more tournaments to play.

“However, if we keep doing as we are doing fingers crossed we will put ourselves in a great position to qualify for the Olympics.

“I think my highlight has to be the World Championships, we put in some great performances, we beat a couple of top 10 players and we ended up losing in the quarter finals to the guys that won it.

“So it is a great tournament for us because to show that you are a top player in the world, the biggest tournament possible it shows when we are playing well we can play with the best.

“It is just finding a way to keep that up because it is quite hard to stay at that level, we are kind of a pair that is maybe going up and down a bit just because we are still getting used to each other.

“We have only been playing together 10 or 11 months, so there is still a lot more we can learn from another on how to play as a partnership and so on."

But the action does not stop with the World Championship with the new National Badminton League (NBL) season fast approaching, and plenty of European tournaments on the horizon it is set to be a busy few months for Langridge and Ellis.

“We have got three tournaments in Europe which are really important for our Olympic qualifying campaign and then when we finish them we are straight onto the first match of the season,” said Langridge, who is captain of Surrey Smashers.

“I am really looking forward to the start of the new NBL season, I am hoping it is going to be a great season for Surrey Smashers.”
