Wandsworth's Paralympic table tennis star Aaron McKibbin travels to Denmark this week hoping to add a European medal to his tally and boost his chances of qualification for the 2016 Paralympic Games.

The 24-year-old is competing in the for the ITTF PTT European Championships, with the action getting underway on Monday.

McKibbin has had some good wins this year, but has struggled with consistency and is keen to produce his best form at the last major championship before Rio.

“It has been frustrating having an up and down season especially in such a vital one,” McKibbin said.

“But this is also down to the level of my class now - all the players are getting better and if you’re not quite on your ‘A’ game they can pick your pocket.

"But that's exciting because every match you know you’re going to have a battle."

He added: “I feel I just need to go into every match mentally very focused and play with freedom and belief.

"That's when I play my best table tennis and produce my best results so I'm going to focus on what I want to do and not my opponent.”

Although hampered by a minor hand injury McKibbin, who will also play in the men’s class 8 team event with fellow London 2012 team bronze medalist Ross Wilson, feels that his preparation for Denmark has gone well.

He said: “I've been doing my best in training and I’m looking forward to the competition.

"The injury has been a minor setback, but it won't affect me in the Europeans - I’ll be as ready as I can be and I can't wait.

"Having experience of preparing for majors is a massive benefit - knowing the set up and being used to the pressure can only help.

"The majors are what we always look forward to the most as it's always the goal for the year and as a squad we are normally very strong at the major competitions.”

With less than a year to go until the Paralympic Games thoughts of Rio are never far away.

“I think Rio is in the back of everyone’s mind,” added McKibbin, who was named Wandsworth Active Sports Person of the Year in 2012.

“It's obviously the main goal but in the Europeans that won't be in my head - this is a major competition and one I would really like to be successful in.

"Thinking about Rio will come after but for now my mind is fixed on Denmark.”
