More teenagers were assaulted in Croydon than in any other London borough in the past six years, statistics show.

Since July 2009, 1,619 teenagers have been treated by paramedics after being assaulted in the borough, according to the London Ambulance Service’s (LAS) latest call-out figures.

The second-highest number of teen assaults were recorded in Newham, which had 99 fewer than Croydon.

Croydon was also the borough with the third-highest number of assaults on women, at 3,464, behind Southwark and Lambeth.

The figures show that paramedics in Croydon are some of the busiest in the capital, with 297,930 LAS call outs altogether in the past six years to September - second only to Westminster.

Figures released separately by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) show that Croydon firefighters are just as occupied.

There have been 3,705 "primary fires" - those involving occupied buildings, vehicles, or machinery - in the borough since January 2009, according to London Fire Brigade.

Only Westminster experienced more, figures show.

LFB also responded to 575 "deliberate vehicle fires" in Croydon in the past six years, second only to Bromley.

But office workers in some of the town centre's tallest buildings can take heart: LFB data reveals they are nearly 600 per cent less likely to get stuck in a lift than their counterparts in Tower Hamlets.
