Police swoop on boy racers

9:53am Friday 11th May 2007

Boy racers were confronted by police in Imperial Way last night as part of an operation to crack down on cruising meetings.

Officers swooped on the Croydon Airport Industrial Estate to quiz young drivers who gather at the site off Purley Way every Thursday.

Businesses in and around Imperial Way and residents living nearby have been demanding police do something about the antisocial meetings for years.

There have been several serious accidents linked to the meetings, including an incident last month were a 21-year-old narrowly escaped being killed during a four-car smash.

It's about time the police got there fingers out and did something about this. No doubt this will be a one off appearence and the boy racers will be back next week!!

clive, coulsdon says...

i appreciate what jeff is saying, but police cannot spend their whole time stopping these 'youths' when croydon is so busy and the police are under staffed. I recently moved out of south croydon to coulsdn as it is quieter, but i still hear police sirons day and night. i think it's about time the government and the courts started supporting the police rather than laying the blame in the hands of the people we rely on everyday.

The police know about this. Its on every Thursday!!! Its been going on for years. There is only so much the police can do about it. In all due respect they dont harm anyone, its on late at night and the road is pretty isolated. If these youths go round smashing their cars then its their own problems.

Emma, Melbourne says...
3:06am Mon 14 May 07

P: If they smash up their own cars then that's fine... But what if they hurt themselves and require an ambulance... They are an menace to the local area.
In Melbourne the police have now got powers to take the cars away from hoon/boyracer drivers! They took three this weekend and will take them for 10 days and fine them and charge them to get them back, and if this happens 3 times the car is destroyed. Maybe the police need to take this attitude.

Nigel, Carshalton says...
10:33am Mon 14 May 07

P - how can you say that they don't hurt anyone?!! Read the article again.. "several serious accidents".. "21 yr old narrowly escaped being killed"

Emma - I couldn't agree more! Why should we pay for them!!

Craig, Guernsey says...
2:21pm Mon 14 May 07

I am sick of this.

I drive a modified car that i built myself from nothing, I am proud of the car i drive and enjoy going out to meet friends and socialise in the evening after work. Why does everyone instantly blame those with the tuned up cars for deaths on the roads, anyone can have an accident and there are lots of people i have seen driving badly of all ages. I have been on the roads for 5 years, yes it is not long but i have never had any type of accident behined the wheel, so being blamed for the minority is an insult. The people should try and understand that it is only a small amount that break the law and endanger lives, the police should monitor the situation yes i agree there, but do not steriotype people by there age and the type of car that they drive.

P, says...
2:43pm Mon 14 May 07

I do know that there have been people injured and killed but if you go and take part in these things or spectate then you are putting your own lives in danger.
Like I mentioned before the police know about it. Its on every Thursday night and has been for years!!!!!

6:30pm Mon 14 May 07

i agree with what u are all saying but i also drive a modified/show car and attend these MEETS as do all my friends we turn up chat exchange thoughts and leave we cause no harm to others but some do why dont the police / goverment arrange a place where we can meet and show our cars not every week but once a month or something ? that way we wont have to go behind there backs and they can control who comes and who goes !!! i wont stop going and will keep following what i believe can be a safer place for people to meet and show there cars!!!

Emma, Melb says...
12:34am Tue 15 May 07

Dan, Why should the police have to find a place for you to go and look at cars for?

Join a car club!
And I have nothing against having a modified car, my own boyfriend has one.

terry, thornton heath says...
1:19pm Tue 15 May 07

This all sounds very good above!!

I suggest we as the public take actions into our own hands, what we need to do as OAP's is to get out there on a thursday night when all the youth are out and about in there moded'd up cars, and drive are nissan micra's, are skoda's, are big old people carriers we only use once a year and of course are family caravans we always use throughout the year to take ourselves down to dorset or cornwall.
And then sooner or later this riff-raff kids that they are will go away. Maybe on to lambeth's borough where i know the police there aren't as good as the croydon and south norwood police.
It would be great for the police if they could seize the cars and then the police could use them, thats a good way of building bridges with the local youths and the police, because when the youth get arrested then can travel in style rather than the 'meat van', i so often hear them say!!!

B, expat says...
2:58pm Tue 15 May 07

Dan, what makes you think you "have" to go behind the police's backs? There are plenty of legally organised car meets in the south east, how difficult is it to go to them instead? Nobody is forcing you to go to "illegal" meets/get into trouble or break any laws. Nobody gets everything they want, when they want it, because they think they should be entitled to have it. It's life. The police have better things to do than chase stroppy kids in cars. Wouldn't you rather they went and solved serious crimes instead? So would they - and the rest of society. Think about it!

I agree with Dan, im a Female driver who attends the cruz on a Thursday and also legal cruzes for example Santa Pod (show cars). We go to show off our cars not what they do but what they look like my boyfriend who has spent thousands on modifiying his car has a hobbie just like u who has hobbies collecting stamps his hobbie is cars. i also drive a semi modified car along with another female driver but us girls do NOT drive silly or dangerously as we have modified our cars for people to look at not to see how fast we go. i agree with some of ur points abt the cruz being dangerous due to the accidents and deaths i was at the cruz wen the young boy was killed and i know its not very nice to say but it could of happened any where you could walk across the rd and get killed by a bus. so y do we get all the negative publicity when us 'Boy or girl racers!'do this and not someone off the street? just because our cars are modified does not mean they do anything different than yours does your fly???? because mine does'nt. what im trying to say is that if the gaverment can make an area for us to meet and is supervised they will see what goes on and how much effort goes into these cars.
the 'BOY / GIRL RACERS ARE NO DIFFERENT TO WHEN YOU ALL WAS YOUNGER REMEMBER THEM DAYS ENJOYING LIFE AMD HAVIN FUN THATS ALL THERE DOING. X

by the way doug burberry caps are out the new fashion is nike tracksuits and as for our ridiculous cars ive own my golf for 3 months and everyone puts there thumbs up to mine they dont laugh but i laugh at old people who cant drive and to be honest by the way u talk u must be one of them " did u no my road accidents happen from old people who "CAN" drive (NOT) i reckon all old people should have to take a test every other year just so we can get them off the road to make it a safer place for us newer generation of drivers !!!

sarcasm is also lost on you young boys.
for your info, young drivers, male drivers, and those within the first two years of passing their test fall in to the category of "most at risk of accident"
if all you do is sit and show your cars then why is it that there are hundreds of tyre marks on the road at imperial way???
im sure your golf is just dandy, in fact i own a gti so share your taste in marque.
i dont think ill succombe to a nike tracksuit though.
by the way im 27, you may see me on the road some time in croydon, ill be the one splitting at the sides laughing at the precessions of modded novas and all the other silly cars

Dan. You're showing your true colours now! You seem to think anyone over the age of 60 should evacuate the roads so you and your boy racer friends can play cars. How do you propose senior citizens get about? Are you offering to do their shopping or take them to their appointments? Why shouldn't they use the road? You say they can't drive - but how many kids have accidents in cars, compared to elderly people? You've only been driving five minutes, what makes you think you can drive better than someone who has 30 years experience? You're deluded, but you won't understand that until you grow up and stop seeing cars as the be-all and end-all, and acknowledge them for the dangerous machines they really are... especially in the hands of kids who 'think' they can drive just because they've spent money on an M reg Nova and think they know everything.

Lisa, Croydon says...
10:40am Wed 16 May 07

There are two types of 'cruisers'.You have the ones who have nice modified cards and go to these meets to show them off(fair enough). Then you got the boy racers who drive nothing more than Fiesta's and Novas' and Punto's and cause accidents because, quite frankly they cant drive. They drive recklessly and push their little tinpot cars to the limit! I own a MR2 and am part of the owners club. If these boys are so into cars, why dont they join an owners club and go to the regular legal meets? These meets in Vally Park are illegal and majority are just a bunch of chavs wanting to race their crappy little cars and cause havoc in the surrounding areas. Its not fair on the residents.

And if the police got some of them community officers to patrol the road that might deter some of these rascals!!

The police cannot do that so what do they do? harasses other drivers to prove to the public that they are doing something about it There is a rumor that there is more CCTV cameras in croydon than NEW YORK CITY if this is true then the police are useless

Reality check ... if you're doing something illegal and the police have to show up, then it's YOU that's wasting tax payers money. As an aside, can you use punctuation please, reading your posts is hard going. Why don't you stick to the legal cruises? Why do you feel you have to do something illegal, when there's perfectly good legal events going on? You know that you'll never get your 'cruise' made legal!! If you went somewhere legal, the police would be elsewhere dealing with other idiots and leave you lot and your rustbuckets alone ;)

bobby boy, croydon says...
4:15pm Sun 20 May 07

If you call parking up along a road illegal then your as sad as the police,as for driving rust buckets some people spend more doing up there cars then new ones cost.

And as for legal cruises i said on here we go to all of them including chelsea cruise and that is not a legal cruise but the police leave that one alone and that has been going for years.

The police in croydon aint got nothing better to do, as they cant catch criminals in the proper way they turn up at our cruise to make there targets up.

Why should the council put speed humps down that road?! For gods sake there are hardly any roads left that havent got speed humps and you want them down there too?!
Like Ive said I think 3 times now - the police know about this so why dont they do something about it like sit down there when its on?! And for those of you reading this and saying the police are needed for far better things - well like what? Patrolling the drunken idiots stumbling around Croydon town centre? I swear Ive never seen so many police around in one place!
If the police havent stopped this criuse so far then its hardly top of their priority!
I say let them go and smash their cars! Ive been to this "cruise" before and its a pile of ****! But for the people who take it seriously it could be a good night out. And as expected you will always get those few people that have to ruin it by racing and losing control, but if you go to take part then your the one risking your life and the lives of those around you.

What's your excuse for the insult? I'm neither - I'm young and educated and wouldn't be doing the job I'm doing if I was 'stupid'! To me, stupid means taking a car worth £250 and spending hundreds if not thousands of pounds on it to make it look the epitome of chav. Why not just buy a new car? There's nothing clever about modding! As the saying goes, 'you can't polish a turd' lmao! It'll still be a nova at the end of the day, no matter how much you spend on disguising it! On another note, if you write off your car, or it gets stolen, you'll get a couple of hundred pounds back from your insurance for something you spent a couple of thousand on! If I'm stupid, then what does that make you?!!!

I thought you said you raced at a race track? You really are a compulsive liar, aren't you.

Don't you ever drive at any other time of day except midnight? How do you get to Valley Park, do you get a tow? I see you're now adding children and parents to the list (along with the elderly people you mentioned before, and of course, the police) of people who shouldn't be allowed out in cars so that you and your mates can have the roads to yourselves, despite the fact you insisted you've got access to a race track that only exists in your tiny brain. Nobody can accuse you of being selfish, can they.

If you ever find out which one of your 'uncles' fathered you, I'm sure he'll be delighted you turned out such a pillar of society.

This isn't a forum for a cruise, lmao, this is a thread for discussing a news report on boy racers.

If you actually bother to read the thread, you'll see that Bobby boy has already asked someone to race him.

Maybe you should take adult literacy classes. It helps to be able to read things before replying, otherwise you make yourself look like a muppet when you don't have a clue what you're talking about, let alone know how to spell it!

Where my family drives to is none of your business! Even if they don't go to Valley Park at midnight, it's still feasible they could be out on nearby roads as they only live a mile from there. I assume you don't leave your cars at Valley Park, but drive there and back? Aren't people allowed out after dark unless they're wearing baseball caps, driving ridiculous cars, smoking weed and playing sh1te music with their windows down?

Did I hit a nerve with the in-breeding btw? You both mentioned it!

There's loads of points above that neither of you have answered and people are still waiting for your replies. Why don't you answer them instead of lying your miserable little butts off about things like race tracks?!

Maybe you should take adult literacy classes. It helps to be able to read things before replying, otherwise you make yourself look like a muppet when you don't have a clue what you're talking about, let alone know how to spell it!

If you have nothing better to do but insult people then why bother comeing on here you are more childish then the boy racers get a life and GROW UP.

Where my family drives to is none of your business! Even if they don't go to Valley Park at midnight, it's still feasible they could be out on nearby roads as they only live a mile from there

Dick the cruise is in an estate not on local roads they dont sit around on the purley way do they STUPID

Aren't people allowed out after dark unless they're wearing baseball caps, driving ridiculous cars, smoking weed and playing sh1te music with their windows down?

More insults not every one fits in to how you think a boy racer should look its people like you that the police should arrest, one sided idiots how immature.

Oh dear, you can't take constructive criticism, can you Alan! I pointed out forum etiquette so you don't keep making a fool of yourself, and you throw your toys out of your pram!

It's fact you can't spell, you can't punctuate, you don't have a clue how to construct a coherent sentence, let alone a whole post, and you hadn't read the thread before you started barking up the wrong tree with your tw@ttage. It stands to reason that your English needs brushing up on.

If you think the police arrest people for having an opinion, rather than those causing a nuisance, then you've got a very warped view of the law. Why don't you try debating fact, instead of making up rubbish? It's really not that difficult. Maybe that English course would help you with that, too!

As for who's insulting who, your last post alone was a complete barrage of insults:

get a life and grow up
dick
stupid
one sided idiot
immature
more childish than the boy racers (is that actually possible?)

Again, learning better English and expanding your rather limited vocabulary would help you express yourself in a more adult fashion. That's not an insult, it's fact!

The best comment ive seen here is Alan's. Not everyone that attends cruises is a Chav and drives around in a badly modified car. As for stereotyping the makes of cars that people drive, most young drivers cannot afford to drive around in Volvos you know.

Chavette (female) ('ch' pronounced as in chair)' is a mainly derogatory slang term in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American 'Hip-Hop' (African-American) and 'Guido' (Italian-American) fashions and stereotypes such as gold jewellery and 'designer' clothing combined with elements of working class British street fashion. They are generally considered to have no respect for society, and be ignorant or unintelligent. The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005.

The defining features of the stereotype include clothing in the Burberry pattern (notably a now-discontinued baseball cap) and from a variety of other casual and sportswear brands. Tracksuits, hoodies, sweatpants and baseball caps are particularly associated with this stereotype. Response to the term has ranged from amusement to criticism that it is a new manifestation of classism. The term has also been associated with delinquency, the "ASBO Generation", "Hoodie culture" and "yob culture".

lets not forget that this article appeared due largely to the fact that people were getting hurt and property destroyed as a direct result of these "cruisers"
ill post what i want when i want on this site as it is intended for people like me who live in the area and take an interest in whats going on in croydon.
Mark you do not keep me i work hard for my living, you must have a lot of time on your hands as youve obviously read the numerous posts on this site and then felt the need to comment.
if you dont give a stuff about the cruise or the state of croydon then you need to find something better to do instead of using this site. i have an interest in croydon and the happenings in my area as i have a child, i dont think thats sad.
sounds to me like someones got his boy racer friends on to this site to support him
if you support the cruise your a d**k plain and simple. the cars dont magically appear at the cruise, they are driven there at speeds - ive seen them, and laughed at them
go play cars with eachother you silly fools!!!!!!!!!

Bobby boy, your excerpt means nothing! I can do the same thing, look! http://en.wikipedia.
org/wiki/Boy_racer

In some parts of the United Kingdom, where car culture is sometimes seen as being inextricably linked to chav culture, the term Barry Boy can sometimes be used. It is interesting to note that because of the obvious links between chav culture and car culture the word chav may be used in reference to boy racers. During the height of the XR3's popularities in the eighties and early nineties as they were a choice of boy racers, they and owners were referred to as XR3 Moron.

Jamie, no, not every boy racer is a chav, but bobby boy, alan, lisa etc all come across as chavs (yob culture, see bobby boy's post above (thanks for helping me to make my point, bobby boy!)) due to their foul mouthed and abusive natures. You only have to read their childish drivel to see that.

What's that got to do with anything? I'm not a boy, nor do I race my car, but I'm on a thread talking about boy racers! You offer up something completely irrelevant, but time and time again you avoid answering a simple question such as "where is the race track?"

Bobby boy has another friend!

Why shouldn't I post my opinion, Kate? Bobby boy keeps leaving his opinion about me, are you going to tell him not to post, too? Or are you going to be hypocritical and say nothing to him?

Is this just for people who like boy racers then? It's odd because I thought it was an open forum for anyone to post. Or am I wrong?

I'm sorted with both, thanks for the concern!

What's a "sado"? I've searched but can only find www.sado.org or something about sado-masochism, or about an island called Sado. None of those apply to me so you'll have to enlighten me.

I'll try very hard to care!

I've had that a number of times Will. I don't understand why they feel so compelled to take such risks? If they want to kill themselves, then they should go and do it, but leave innocent people out of it. They seem to think they're brilliant drivers but the opposite is true.

The very nature of your post is hypocritical! You said 'leave people alone' yet you're insulting me in the same sentence! Maybe you should check the meaning of the word in a dictionary before you post again!

While you're looking in the dictionary, remember it was you who appeared on this thread and had a go at me first. The word is 'hypocrite'!
