Winner - The Canbury Arms

The Canbury Arms was built in the 1870s and used as a Royal Mail coaching house.

Local residents, labourers and passing travellers would have enjoyed its bustling and social atmosphere plus quality wines, ales and hearty food.

It occupies a corner site just off the London Road in Kingston Upon Thames, close to the town centre and railway station. It is at the hub of a popular residential area nestling between Richmond Park and the River Thames.

The Canbury Arms was bought by Michael Pearson in March 2005 and immediately closed for a complete refurbishment designed to recreate as many of the original features as possible. The large garden area had been sadly neglected over the years and filled with rubbish and undergrowth. This was completely cleared and paved. A heated retractable awning to seat a further 70 customers in all weathers was built to transform it into a popular dining and drinking area.

With a focus on attentive service to customer requirements from staff, a steady growth in business is ensuring that all target forecasts are regularly beaten.

The Canbury Arms was the first independently run and smoke-free gastro pub in Kingston upon Thames.

Independent mindbodysoul

Independent mindbodysoul opened in Balham in April 2005.

It is the creation of Vicky Stothard. After living in Balham for 10 years, she became fed up with having to travel to the West End to find good quality hair and beauty establishments.

"I left my job in the City and decided to take the plunge in opening my own business - in an industry I knew little about. We have already become a very well known and established salon in Balham and the surrounding area. In just over two years we have grown from a client base of 0 to more than 7,000 people and now employ 18 staff.

"Having been a customer for many years, all that I have learnt I have applied to Independent mindbodysoul with my aim to offer a retreat from the stresses of every day life."
