A mum of four died after being hit by a lorry as she walked to the shops to buy eggs.

Muserat Hassan, 68, of Griffiths Road, South Wimbledon, was fatally injured by a Royal Mail vehicle in Merton Road at around 9.45am.

Muserat, originally from Pakistan, had lived in the UK with her husband Mohammad since the 1950s and the couple have five grandchildren.

Her son Qasim Hassan, 31, said: "I was aware of an accident and heard it was an Asian lady but I didn't know if it was my mum or not.

"My dad went down to the scene and the police had cordoned off the whole road. They would not let anyone look at the body.

"At about 2pm, they let my dad identify the body. I got there at 2.30pm and my dad was in the ambulance finding it hard to breath.

"I saw my mother's face. I think she must have died instantly."

Nabell Butt, a close family friend, said: "She had gotten halfway across the road and went under the driver's side of the vehicle.

"She had problems walking but she always looked to get out of the house. She didn't let her problems get the better of her."

The accident caused traffic chaos as roads surrounding Merton Road, including Merton High Street and Kingston High Street, were cordoned off and motorists were diverted.

Raj Satchi, manager at Tesco in Merton Road, said Muserat was a regular customer and had come to the store to buy eggs.

"We realised something was wrong when all of a sudden the road was blocked," he said. "We were told someone had died. It was a bad accident."

Police confirmed they were called to the accident at 9.50am and a police forensic examiner was on the scene by 10.50am.
