Concept The ecocabin project was born of the idea that rural holiday accommodation should both protect and promote the surrounding countryside. The design of ecocabin offers luxurious simplicity and successfully combines traditional practicality with technical innovation.

Construction The frame of the building is constructed of local Douglas Fir and insulated with British sheep's wool. The external walls are homegrown Larch and the internal walls are lined with reedboard and then limeplastered. The floors are finished in native Ash. Environment friendly paints; natural wood finishes; organic fabrics, towels and bed linen and natural dyes and pigments have been used to create a healthy and chemical-free living space.

Energy and waste Solar energy provides hot water and ecocabin is heated by a wood pellet stove. Ecocabin uses a renewable electricity supplier and all appliances and lighting have been chosen for their energy efficiency. All recyclable materials (glass, tins and plastics) are collected and there is a worm assisted composting system for biodegradable waste.

Interior design The interior design aim of ecocabin has been to create a stylish contemporary look utilising existing resources. For example, much of the furniture is from a local recycling scheme and the kitchen work surface is made from yoghurt pots. Finishing touches are by local artists and many have an environmental theme such as rag rug pictures, mosaic framed mirrors from broken crockery and a melted wellington wall hanging/coat hooks.

Rural retreat Ecocabin offers the perfect opportunity to escape from it all and you could be forgiven for wanting to spend the whole of your holiday in Obley. In warm weather relaxing on the verandah with a glass of local wine or cider listening to the calls of the curlews and buzzards. In colder weather snuggle up in front of the wood pellet stove and wind up the radio or choose a book from the eclectic ecocabin library. If you feel you need a little exercise, there is endless unspoilt countryside to explore on foot or by bicycle direct from your front door.

Shropshire attractions Although Obley feels very remote it is actually within easy access of the more conventional tourist trail. Hereford, with its famous cathedral and the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge can be reached within an hour and the castle and acclaimed restaurants of Ludlow are only half an hour away. There are many National Trust and English Heritage properties nearby, including Stokesay Castle and Powis Estate and gardens.

Local produce Ecocabin offers a Buy Local' shopping service (details with booking form) that provides you with the option of a hamper of basic foods and ingredients on your arrival. Not only will this be very convenient after your journey but also provides an edible guide to the shops, suppliers and producers in the area. A stay in Ecocabin is a truly unique experience that will capture the very essence of the South Shropshire Hills and help protect its beautiful countryside for the future.
