More than 1,000 homes were left without power after an "oil theft" sparked a fire at a New Addington electricity substation - the second break-in at the site in a week.

Operator UK Power Networks is considering tightening security at the site in King Henry's Drive following last night's fire, which damaged the substation and caused power misery for hundreds of families - some waiting until after 4am for their electricity to come back on.

Firefighters from Croydon, Addington and Biggin Hill stations were called to battle the flames at the substation from about 10.40pm yesterday.

Police believe the fire started after someone broke into the substation and drained off a quantity of oil, causing a malfunction.

A UK Power Networks spokeswoman confirmed today that the same substation was broken into a week ago and had equipment stolen.

She added that the company were "looking at increasing security measures on site", although refused to comment on whether changes had been made since last week's break-in.

About 1,416 customers in the New Addington were affected from 11pm last night, with some people left without power until after 4am this morning.

The spokeswoman said: "We understand how difficult it is to be without power at this time of year and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this incident.

"UK Power Networks would like to remind people that tampering with our equipment is extremely dangerous and as well as causing power cuts for people in the area it can also endanger the lives of the culprits."

Residents took to social media last night to report power outages and share photos of the fire.
