A masked robber broke into an 89-year-old man's home and stole £1,500 in cash - but not before the pensioner tried to fight him off with his walking stick.

The victim was at home in Burford Way, New Addington, on Sunday evening when a man wearing a balaclava entered the house and attacked him, police said.

During the struggle the pensioner used his stick to defend himself, but was unable to stop the robber escaping with £1,500 in cash in a wallet stolen from the victim's pocket.

The 89-year-old suffered minor injuries after the attack, but did not require hospital treatment.

No arrests have been made and Croydon police are investigating.

Officers are appealing for any information in relation to the robbery, which happened just before 7.45pm on Sunday.

Anyone with information should call Croydon CID on 0203 276 2287 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
