Croydon Harriers Young athletes consolidated their Southern Premier Young Athletes League challenge with a second place finish in their second round match at the Croydon Sports Arena on Sunday.

The match was won comfortably by Enfield and Haringey who scored 446.5 points, with the hosts on 380.5, just easing away from Havering and Mayesbrook (364) and fourth placed Basildon (313).

Croydon athletes won 15 A string events, achieved five event maximums and notched 32 personal bests - as well as winning three of the relays.

The highlight of an absorbing afternoon was Lee McLaughlin's scorching 400m victory in a first class personal best of 49.70 seconds - enough to earn him the male track athlete of the match award.

Trinity School student Omar Dixon also shone at U17 level with a brace of National Grade One performances. He headed the long jump at 6.24m and took a well-deserved second in the 100m in 11.17.

Shot putter Erasmus Ntim-Dwemo was in a class of his own with a huge Grade One effort of 15.16m and Babatunde Amosa, who had earlier finshed second in the triple jump, won the high jump on count back at 1.60m.

Versatile Ned Quiney continued his rapid progress in the pole vault, advancing to 3.30m to win before 13-year-old middle-distance runner Jordan Maurice won the U15 800m in 2:11.16.

Jordan Staples (1.60m) and Harry Rogers (1.50m) headed the A and B high jumps and U13 Trinity athlete Faraz Rafi won the high jump (1.41m) and the 75m hurdles (13.30), before finishing second in the shot put (9.20m) London Mini Marathon winner, Shirley High's Elliot Veheary, controlled his 1,500m throughout to win in 4:52.46.

The Croydon girls continue to improve. U17 thrower Lauren Smithers shone with a hat-trick of wins in the hammer (21.58m), the shot (8.22m) and the javelin (18.64m).

Versatile U15 thrower Nazarine Montgomery was the girls' other winner in her specialist event, the discus, in which she threw 24.69m.

Sprinter Jessica Downs-Goessel was the club's highest placed U15 track athlete, finishing second in the 100m in 13.63.

The Harriers' relay teams took 25 of the 36 points up for grabs.

Their three winning quartets were the boys' U17 4x100m team (Dami Segun, Lee McLaughlin, Oweka Wanogho and Omar Dixon) in 43.86, the U15 4x100m quartet (Andre Gibbs, Nathan Yarde, Jordan Staples and Kristian Wright) in 47.17 and the U15 4x400m team (Arthur Wade, Matthew Leman, Jordan Maurice and Elliott Welch) in 3:53.90.
