Trinity School's new director of sport Alex Codling has reaffirmed his commitment to the post days after accepting a coaching role with National One rugby team London Welsh.

The 33-year-old former NEC Harlequins lock took over at his old school earlier this month after quitting as head coach at Welsh Premiership runners-up Ebbw Vale.

Ambitious Codling was unveiled as the Exiles' new forwards coach at Old Deer Park last week, but is adamant it will not affect his duties at the Shirley Park school.

"Of course, I am very ambitious, but I'm not looking too far into the future," he said.

"My job at Trinity has my total focus. Coaching and rugby are two things I'm passionate about and I think the two jobs will dovetail nicely.

"Another head coach job has never crossed my mind. Because of my commitment to the school I could not fit it in. It is not something I was offered and it is certainly not something I have considered."

Codling took Ebbw Vale from the brink of relegation to second place in the Premiership in the space of 18 months and is looking forward to a similar challenge with London Welsh.

The Richmond-based club are lining up a raid on a number of his former players in South Wales to ensure survival in National One this season, and Codling is looking forward to the challenge.

"There are a lot of similarities between National One and the Welsh Premiership in that it is a very exciting league with a huge amount of quality players," he added.

"It is a huge challenge. With my playing background, I want to bring to the club a lot of the things that I've learnt and have been successful with as a professional player.

"The league is a platform for players to realise their professional ambitions and that is what I want to help London Welsh become."
