A Purley doctor, his wife and two daughters have died in a road accident while visiting relatives in Uganda.

Dr Henry Obonyo, 77, his wife Kevina, 73, and daughters Eliza, 46, and Marjorie, 39, were killed when their minivan spun off the Kampala-Gulu highway on January 2 after a tyre blew out.

The couple's two other daughters and four grandchildren were injured in the crash, but survived.

It is believed Dr Obonyo's family were all south London-based; his daughter Eliza, who died in the crash, lived in Battersea and worked as a payroll officer for Wandsworth council.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Caesar Poblicks, Dr Obonyo’s cousin, said: “It is the most horrible tragedy. Henry’s remaining children are completely heartbroken by the loss of their mum, dad and sisters."

Dr Obonyo, a urologist who lived in Purley Downs Road, is believed to have played a role in overthrowing brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in 1979.

He moved to the UK in 1986 after briefly serving as the country's health minister under president Tito Okello.

It was reportedly the first time the family had visited the country since emigrating in the 1980s.

At the time of the crash the family were on their way to visit the family's ancestral home in the Lamwo district.
