A jet washing company has to pay more than £10,000 after being found guilty of illegally posting adverts on lampposts across Croydon.

Yesterday at Croydon Magistrates Court, RRF Jet Washing Services Ltd and its sole director Kerry Fisher were convicted of illegally posting adverts in Thornton Heath, Shirley, Addington, Waddon, Selsdon and central Croydon.

The company, registered to Wickham Road, Croydon, and Mr Fisher, of Orchard Way in Shirley, were ordered to pay a total of £10,270 - £4,000 each for the offences, plus £2,270 in costs.

The fines come after an investigation by Croydon Council officers, who found a number of illegal signs for the company between 8 June and 31 July last year.

Officers received no reply from the company or Fisher to warning letters instructing them to stop posting the signs.

Councillor Stuart Collins, cabinet member for clean and green Croydon, said: "Fly posters are ugly, can distract drivers and are illegal - this result sends out a clear message that anyone who does it runs the risk of prosecution and fines."

It is the latest prosecution in the council's Don't Mess With Croydon campaign.

At Monday's Croydon Council cabinet meeting, Coun Newman issued a warning to all would-be fly-tippers that Coun Collins "knows where you live".
