A mum has spoken of her disgust after her "tiny" 10-year-old son was mugged on his way home from school on Tuesday.

The boy, who does not want to be named, had been walking from Beaumont Road on to Skeena Hill, in Southfields, when he was jumped from behind by a teenager at 4.05pm.

The robber then grabbed his little victim by the neck and pulled him into a driveway out of sight. He pinned him to the ground and rifled through his pockets.

All the thug could find was a four-year-old mobile phone, which he took, before running back up Skeena Hill and cutting through some gardens in the direction of Whitlock Drive.

The victim's mum, a teacher who works in Wimbledon, said: "I'm absolutely disgusted. The fact is my son is only 10. He's tiny. He has a light mark on his neck from where he was grabbed but otherwise luckily he wasn't hurt.

"He had just got the mobile. I didn't want him to have one because I didn't want him to get mugged, but he needed it as he's just started going to and from school himself. It wasn't even an expensive flashy one though. It was his grandmother's old Nokia so its only value was sentimental."

The shocked 10-year-old went straight home. His mum, who has since been putting up appeal posters in shops throughout Southfields, said: "The police were fantastic but I'm not going to stand for this, not on my own doorstep. There should have been people about at that time of day so I appeal for any witnesses to come forward."

The robber is described as a black boy with short black hair, around 16-years-old, 5ft 5in, and wearing a light grey hooded Nike top with black Nike tracksuit bottoms.

Detective Constable Claire Samy, the investigating officer, said: "If you have any information on the robbery of this young boy then I urge you to come forward to the police."

No one has been arrested and inquiries continue.
