A gang of six thugs crossed the road to throw a man's chips on the ground and bash him in Walton on Saturday.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the 23-year-old man was left with head injuries following an assault in Hersham Road just after 1am.

Detective Constable Stacey Bolton said a group of five or six men and women crossed the road to be on the same side as the victim before one man knocked chips out of the victim's hand.

The man was thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head by the group who then ran off.

He was taken by ambulance to St Peter's Hospital where he was treated for a large lump to the back of his head.

"We are keen to speak to anyone that was in the area at the time and who saw the victim or the group," D Con Bolton said.

Anyone with information should call D Con Bolton at Epsom CID on 0845 125 2222 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 in confidence.
