Detectives today released a CCTV image of the man as they investigate the theft of five-month-old dog Yorkshire Terrier Jessie outside Lidl in Parkway on December 4.
Owner Monika Nowak’s 10-year-old son was waiting for her outside the shop at about 3pm when he was approached by a man who asked if he could pet the dog.
He then picked up Jessie and ran off towards Central Parade.
Speaking to the Croydon Guardian after Jessie was stolen Ms Nowak said she just wanted the person responsible to “bring her back”.
She said: "My heart is broken. She is like my baby."
The suspect is between 18 and 22 years old with brown hair.
He was wearing dark clothes with white trainers.
Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
