Ferrets and fire eating were just some of the spectacular attractions at the 52nd Esher May Fair last Saturday.

The event, organised by Ajax Sea Scouts, was opened by newly-appointed Mayor of Elmbridge Councillor Rosemary Dane.

Coun Dane showed her commitment to the scout movement, which this year celebrates its centenary, by making Walton Firs Scout Association her principal charity for the year.

The weather held out and warmed the crowd, believed to be a record attendance for the event.

Alison Derrick, chairman of the Ajax Sea Scouts, said: "It was a fantastic day - all in all a perfect community event.

"Ajax Sea Scouts are indebted to the local business community for their support by way of sponsorship and their presence on the day."

Ex-Radio 1 and Crackerjack presenter Ed "Stewpot" Stewart compered the event, leaving the audience rolling in the grass with his quips and quick wit throughout the afternoon.

Traditional fairground attractions kept the fun coming and the stalls ranged from olives to doughnuts, hammocks to jewellery.

One of the highlights was the birds of prey, featuring a bald eagle, which left audiences breathless with its size and grace.

The money raised at the event will help Ajax Sea Scouts maintain their fleet, equipment and headquarters at Ditton Reach.
