A Tooting shop being used as an unauthorised social club will be closed.

The premises in Blegborough Road, Furzedown, are known locally as the 'Soma Café' and attracted complaints from local residents.

Many of the activities at the café took place in the early hours of the morning and earlier this month the council received a petition from 225 people citing examples of noise and late night disturbance.

Further complaints of antisocial behaviour have also been made by the local Safer Neighbourhood Panel and the police.

The council's planning applications committee agreed last night the property's current use should cease.

Planning applications chairman Leslie McDonnell said: "Local people have had enough of the late night noise and litter problems associated with large numbers of people using the café.

"The owner does not have planning permission to run the place as a club. In the light of growing concerns locally about antisocial activities, the council will now take the necessary legal steps to close the place down."
