If you are caught drink driving it probably isn't a good idea to climb into the back seat and try to tell police you weren't driving.

But that is exactly what one driver tried to do in Selsdon last night when he was stopped by police.

Police pursued the driver at about 3:30am when he refused to stop on Carlton Road.

During the chase the driver set off what is thought to be a fire extinguisher, leaving a plume of smoke behind the car, according to police.

According to roads and transport police the driver was "so drunk" he climbed into the back of the car and "denied being driver".

The man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and is being held in a south London police station.
