Her next of kin have been informed but she had not yet been formally identified.

A post-morterm examination at Croydon mortuary yesterday concluded a stab wound to the chest had been the fatal blow.

A man, aged in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday night.

Police found him with a stab wound to the shoulder in Gordon Crescent, Addiscombe, at 10.35pm on Thursday.

He was taken to a south London hospital, where he remained in a stable condition last night.

Detectives believe the two stabbings were linked.

A murder investigation, led by Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn, is being conducted by the Metropolitan Police's Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Forensics officers were the house in Meadvale Road yesterday.

The property had been taped off by police.

Neighbour Terry Wiltshire, 72, said his wife had seen a pool of blood inside the house where the victim died on Wednesday night.

He said: "There was an ambulance in the middle of the road and police cars and the blocked off both ends of the street.

"There were at least half a dozen police cars.

"About half an hour later more police turned up with two sniffer dogs and searched around the houses. They searched all the gardens and the bins.

"The front door was left open and my wife saw a really big pool of blood on the floor.

"I think we had more police here than they had at Croydon police station at one stage."
