Croydon Council chief executive Nathan Elvery is to leave his role after three years, it has been announced.

Mr Elvery is departing the £180,000 position to take over at West Sussex County Council, where he will become the authority's first chief executive in more than two years.

A departure date for Mr Elvery has not yet been announced. Council Labour leader Tony Newman today said he was working to achieve a "seamless transition" for the chief executive's successor.

Mr Elvery has been with Croydon Council for 12 years, occupying a number of senior roles. He became temporary chief executive in 2013, succeeding Jon Rouse, and was appointed into the role permanently in July 2014.

In a statement released through the council press office today, Mr Elvery said: "Croydon is a fantastic place, but I feel now is the right time to move on. I committed to changing the organisation and laying down strong foundations for the administrations and I feel this has been achieved.

“I have greatly enjoyed my 12 years in Croydon it has been a privilege to have served a number of political administrations and has been an honour to work alongside many talented officers, all of whom are deeply committed to delivering the best for the people of this borough.

"I wish you every success in the future."

Mr Elvery has worked with both Labour and Conservative led administrations during his 12-year tenure with the council.

He joined the council as director of finance and resources in 2004, and became deputy chief executive and executive director of corporate resources and customers services in 2008.

Cllr Newman said: “I am sure I speak for all of members of the council, officers and partners when I say that we are sad to see Nathan leave the council. He has done a fantastic job, working with this administration to lay the groundwork that has enabled us to already deliver much of our manifesto.

“Nathan has led the council’s transformation which sees us in a really strong position as we move in to the next phase of delivery of our ambitions and for that, I thank him and wish him well in his new role."

Cllr Newman said further details of Mr Elvery's departure would be confirmed next week.

He added: "I am currently working with the senior management team on the necessary interim arrangements in order to ensure a seamless transition."

A spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council said: “We can confirm that, subject to the normal checks, Nathan Elvery has been offered the role of chief executive at West Sussex County Council.

"It is anticipated his appointment will be confirmed at the full council meeting on April 15.”
