Dozens of protesters gathered in Croydon town centre yesterday to protest against the Government’s immigration policies.

The demonstration, organised by the Revolutionary Communist Group (RCG), was staged outside Lunar House in Wellesley Road - the home of the country’s only asylum-screening unit.

Andrew George, a member of the RCG Croydon branch, said the protest was directed at Government policies he claimed “scapegoated migrants”, including the Immigration Bill currently making its way through Parliament.

He said at least 10 different organisations had been involved in the protest, including members of the the All African Women’s Group and Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants.

Mr George, 26, added: “It was a good turnout, about 60 people, and then people who were queuing to go into Lunar House were saying we should do it again.

The bill, which includes plans to criminalise undocumented migrants working in Britain, suffered a recent blow in the House of Lords when Labour and Liberal Dems voted for amendments.
