A lorry and two rubbish trucks have crashed in Purley.

Police shut Purley Way following the collision, near the junction with Edgehill Lane, at about 4.15am.

Officers found a heavy goods vehicle had crashed with two refuse lorries.

London Ambulance and London Fire Brigade also attended.

None of the drivers involved were injured, but a firefighter from Purley fire station said it was a "good job" the driver of the second refuse truck had not been carrying any passengers.

UPDATE 9.50am: Roads in the area have now reopened, according to Transport for London

He added: "We were only there about half an hour, there wasn’t a lot we could do. There wasn’t anyone trapped.

“The driver of the middle truck had to climb out of his window because he couldn’t open his door.

“[But] it was a good job [the third driver] wasn’t carrying a passenger – it could have been a bit naughty for them.

“You wouldn’t expect that at 4am, would you."

No arrests have been made.

Purley Way has been closed from Purley Cross to Imperial Way while the damaged lorries are the carriageway, with traffic being diverted through Pampisford Road.

The disruption is expected until at least 9am.
