A 23-year-old man has been arrested after two people suffered head injuries in Thornton Heath.

Police were called to reports of an assault in Thornton Heath High Street at 5.26am.

Paramedics also attended and took the 23-year-old man to a south London hospital with head injuries.

He was later discharged and arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Officers subsequently went to a house in Gillet Road, Thornton Heath, and found a 28-year-old man with head injuries.

He was taken to a south London hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Police cordoned off part of High Street his morning.

A witness told the Croydon Guardian she had been told by police there had been a stabbing.

But police later said no one had been stabbed.

The woman said: "When I was out walking my dog I asked the officer what had happened and he told me there had been a stabbing and that the victim went to the phone box down the road to call for help."
