A woman was taken to hospital after burglars broke into her Caterham home and threatened her with a plank of wood and a pole.

The men forced their way into the house in Stanley Street at about 12.20am this morning by breaking through the glass panel of the front door.

When inside they threatened the woman, aged in her 40s, with the makeshift weapons. It is not known whether anything was stolen.

After the ordeal the distressed victim fell to the floor and was taken to East Surrey Hospital, where she currently remains.

Two teenagers, aged 19 and 20, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are custody.

Surrey Police have appealed for anyone who may have more information to come forward.

Detective Sergeant, Kerry Akehurst said: "There were several members of the public in Stanley Street at the time of the incident and I am urging anybody who witnessed the incident or events leading up to, or following the incident to get in touch with us immediately.

"This has understandably caused a great deal of distress to the victim and any information you have could help us piece together the events and bring those responsible to justice.”
