Forget spending a penny - two Croydon men caught urinating in the street have been slapped with fines of more than £400.

Magistrates on Tuesday ordered Otegwu Godwin and Ronak Patel to pay £435 for publicly relieving themselves in the borough.

Godwin, of Heathhurst Road in Sanderstead, was caught urinating behind Centrale shopping centre in Frith Street on December 3 last year.

The following day Patel, of Weybridge Road in Thornton Heath, was spotted taking a leak on the footpath in Colliers Water Lane.

The fines are among the latest wave of prosecutions brought by Croydon Council as part of its Don’t Mess With Croydon campaign.

Others prosecuted on Tuesday included Mumbela Judi Jaime, of Church Road in South Norwood, who was fined £600 for fly-tipping an office chair, a bed frame, cardboard boxes containing waste and wood in her own street last December.

And Joel Edwards, of Portland Road, was ordered to pay a total of £280 for dropping a cigarette butt in North End.

More than 100 people have now been prosecuted as part of the campaign, which has been a flagship policy of the Labour council since its election in 2014.

Councillor Stuart Collins, deputy leader and cabinet member for Clean and Green Croydon, said: “The Don’t Mess campaign is about everyone doing the responsible thing to keep our borough tidy, and these latest prosecutions underline how we will continue to hold fly-tippers and litterers to account.

“I’m proud of the progress made in the two years since we launched this campaign and I look forward to more successes, whether that is continuing to inspire community action or targeting fly-tipping hotspots.”
