In the biggest referendum decision of a generation, the British public has opted to withdraw its EU membership.

London has mostly bucked the national trend, with a high proportion of boroughs in southwest voting for remain.

In Wandsworth, 158,081 votes were cast, a turnout of 71.8 per cent.

Wandsworth voted 75 per cent to remain, with 118,463 votes to 39,421 to leave. 

On Twitter, Putney MP Justine Greening, who campaigned for remain, said: "This isn't the path I wanted Britain to take but we need to respect the result and do our best to confront the challenges brexit now brings.

"Result was not one I wanted but hope lasting legacy will be that a new generation of young voters took their place in our democracy."

More than 63,000 Merton voters chose to remain in the EU while 37,097 wanted to exit. 

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond said he was "proud" to have delivered the referendum and the Conservative Party must come together again. 

In Croydon, 92,913 voted to remain, 54 per cent of the vote, compared with 78,221 leave votes.

Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell said: "Proud that my home town and the great city of which it is part rejected the politics of hate and division yesterday."

In Kingston 52,533 chose remain, compared with 32,737 for leave.

 Richmond voted remain, 75,396 to 33,410 leave votes.

Zac Goldsmith said he was "proud" of the high turnout in Kingston and Richmond. 

Twickenham MP Tania Mathias wrote on her Facebook page: "There will inevitably be some uncertainty ahead as the Government negotiates our withdrawal – it needs to make the result work in the best interests of the whole country, and I will be doing my best to make that happen for Twickenham."

Kingston and Surbiton MP James Berry said: "Now the people have spoken in the #EUref the government must accept their instructions and work to achieve the very best deal for Britain."

However Sutton voted against the London trend, with 76 turnout and a leave vote.

In Sutton, remain took 49,319 and leave 57,241.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said he was proud of the In campaign through his constituency.

Turnout in Epsom and Ewell was 80.4 per cent, with remain just winning, at 23,596 votes to 21,707 to leave.

Epsom and Ewell MP Chris Grayling has said the Prime Minister, who campaigned for remain, must stay on regardless of the result. 

Elmbridge voters also voted to remain, with 45,841 compared to 31,162 votes to leave, and a turnout of 78.1 per cent.

Although there are two results left to declare, these will not be able to impact the overall result.

Northern Ireland and Scotland have voted to remain in the EU, but England and Wales have pushed the national picture to leave.
