A dozy council rubbish truck driver has been caught on camera reversing into a £30,000 Lexus parked in the street.

Footage filmed yesterday morning in South End shows the Croydon Council truck backing up and smashing into the front of the stationary black sports car outside the Cat Ba Island restaurant.

Although the truck appears to stop when it first makes contact with the car, it then carries on reversing, shunting the Lexus out of shot.

As the video ends, the driver of the truck can be seen getting out of his cab and strolling towards the smashed-up motor.

The driver then left without leaving any details, according to the owner of the Lexus.

Pathmamohan Muhilan said he only realised what had happened after viewing the CCTV from the nearby Apatura Restaurant.

He said: "He just couldn't be bothered to walk with the bins to the lorry and moved my car.

"He's… just backed into the car to get the bins by the restauarant. He's tried to come front ways but he couldn't fit in."

Mr Muhilan, who lives in Selsdon, contacted Croydon Council to complain about the damage.

But he said: "They said they contracted a private company out so they're not responsible for it."

Croydon Council's waste collection services are operated by Veolia, which is also contracted to collect waste for several other London councils.

Last October, pictures emerged of a Veolia binman in Croydon urinating on his own lorry during his morning shift.

Mr Muhilan, the principal of Croydon Metropolitan College in South End, said the Lexus had cost him £30,000 to buy new.

Luckily, the car was not a write-off after being shunted by the lorry.

But the principal added: "It's an absolute joke. I have got no words.

"We will find out who he is and make sure he never drives a lorry again."

A spokewoman for Veolia said: "We have launched a full investigation into the incident and our insurers are in the process of contacting Mr Muhilan to resolve this situation.

"All of our drivers receive extensive vehicle handling and safety training and we take any failures to comply with these requirements extremely seriously."

Croydon Council said it had ordered the full investigation and expected "high standards of conduct" from its contractors.
