A mystery "void" opened up in the Croydon Underpass, shutting the road and forcing traffic and bus routes in the area to be diverted.
The northbound lane of the underpass in Wellesley Road was closed this morning after the hole was discovered.
A tweet from Transport for London (TfL) warned drivers the road was blocked "due to a void in the carriageway".
The northbound lane of the underpass is expected to be closed overnight as engineers work "round the clock" to fix the problem, a Croydon Council spokesman said.
Croydon Underpass remains closed n/bound (void in road/works). Q's are currently back to the Croydon Flyover (A232).

The size of the "void" is not known.
There were reports of northbound queues approaching the underpass stretching as far back as the Croydon Flyover at the height of the evening rush hour.
Traffic is still able to travel soutbound on the underpass and northbound on the "over and up" slip roads, Transport for London said.
