A forest of shipping containers has sprung up next to East Croydon station as the pop-up food mall Boxpark begins to take shape.

More than a third of the 97 units have been delivered to the site, which is scheduled to open in late September.

Confirmed tenants include Meatliquor, The Breakfast Club, and Chilango, as well local offerings from familiar Croydon names including The Cronx brewery and the founders of Brgr & Beer.

All of the units have now been let.

The Croydon mall follows in the footsteps of the the company’s successful Shoreditch shopping centre.

On Friday councillors Alison Butler and Mark Watson were shown around the site to see containers being lifted into place.

Much of the fabrication of the containers takes place off site to speed up the process, according to Boxpark's development director Matthew McMillan.

The mall will be open for five years before making way for Stanhope and Schroders's Ruskin Square development, comprised of 625 flats and 1.25m sq ft of offices.

The Croydon mall had initially been expected to follow its Shoreditch predecessor in mixing shops with restaurants and bars, but founder Roger Wade later revealed in July that the new site would focus exclusively on food and drink.
