A mystery "void" that caused days of traffic chaos for drivers in Croydon town centre has finally been filled.

The northbound lane of Croydon Underpass in Wellesley Road was shut last Wednesday after a 1.5 metre deep hole was discovered near a disused tramline.

Transport for London had warned drivers to avoid the area because of a "void in the carriageway," thought to have emerged during scheduled roadworks in Wellesley Road.

Engineers worked "round the clock" over the weekend the fill the gaping hole, a Croydon Council spokesman said, and both lanes of the underpass have now reopened.

Piles of rubble were strewn over the road at the northbound exit of the underpass on Thursday afternoon as a digger churned up the carriageway.

A worker at the site said the hole had been caused by subsidence underneath the road.
