Three large combat knives, flick knives, class A drugs and £1,000 in cash have been seized by police in a series of raids targeting violent gangs in south west London.

More than 100 officers raided 22 homes in Tooting, Streatham, Tulse Hill, Mitcham, Southwark, West Norwood and Carshalton yesterday and Monday with 21 people arrested for various offences.

Operation Dibbin, led by Wandsworth officers, was carried out after police became aware drugs were openly being traded by gangs who were carrying out violent attacks to maintain their turf.

Detective superintendent Peter Laverick from Wandsworth police said: “In this case I believe the drug market has generated a fear of crime through its influence on violence in public places, anti-social behaviour and acquisitive crime, and this had to be dealt with decisively.

"Nobody should have to tolerate the annoyance of drug markets in their area, and the fears and concerns it brings.

“Today's intensive operation is indicative of our commitment to keep our community safe, and listen to and act on their concerns and intelligence.

“Our aim is to disrupt and dismantle crime, and remind those intent on dealing drugs that we will locate them and prosecute them to eliminate the misery they inflict."
