Images released in the search for a library campaigner missing for eight weeks turned out to be a “man of similar appearance”, police have determined.

Robert Gibson, known for his work to safeguard the future of the Upper Norwood Joint Library, left his Gipsy Hill home to go for a walk at about 3pm on June 13.

Police released CCTV images of a man they believed was Mr Gibson in the Isle of Wight on July 22, but have since determined the footage is not of him.

Police still believe Mr Gibson is in the Isle of Wight and are continuing to appeal for information on his whereabouts as the search for him enters its ninth week.

On the day the 45-year-old dad went missing he was seen in a Co-operative shop in Central Hill, Crystal Palace, before travelling to the Isle of Wight.

Police released CCTV of Mr Gibson at a Co-operative store in Landguard Road, in the Isle of Wight, on June 13.

He purchased a number of items at 7.45pm before walking out of the shop and across the car park in the direction of Shanklin town centre.

Mr Gibson, known by friends as Robbie, enjoys coastal walks and stays on campsites, according to police.

He was seen at 6.45pm on June 13 catching the catamaran from Portsmouth to Ryde.

He is then believed to have boarded a train at Ryde Pier Head towards Lake and Shanklin.

On June 21 police released CCTV images of his arrival in the hope that someone may know where he is staying.

Police said officers and his family were "increasingly concerned for his safety and wellbeing".

Friends say his disappearance is out of character and they are becoming increasingly worried.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police in Lambeth on 101 or the charity Missing People on 116000.
