A woman escaped from a burning house in South Norwood after neighbours used a ladder to rescue her from the flames.

The fire ripped through the ground floor of the house in Canham Road after breaking out in a dining room just after midnight last night.

Firefighters raced to the scene but found the woman had already escaped by climbing out of a first floor window.

A dog was also rescued from the flames.

Firefighter Danny Phillips said it had been "quite a big fire, but luckily we got it down quite quickly".

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene.

A police car could be seen parked outside the house this morning, and it is believed investigators are still trying to establish the cause of the fire.
