Free parking to entice shoppers

An experimental system of free parking bays in Coulsdon is to be tested while the design strategy to rejuvenate the struggling town is finalised.

The future of Brighton Road has long been under discussion and this week residents were sent documents showing a new parking scheme to replace the red route, as well as the latest plans for the second phase of regeneration.

The new parking system comes into operation on Monday, June 18, and replaces the red route, which was officially handed over to Croydon Council by Transport for London on June 4.

Double yellow lines will replace the red ones and some free parking, loading and disabled bays will be put in place.

A roundabout at the junction of Chipstead Valley Road and Brighton Road and a tree-lined boulevard from Lion Green Road to Chipstead Valley Road have both been included in the new plans for the town's development.

The changes came too late for dancewear studio Born 2 Dance and hair salon Marcel's, however, which both closed on Saturday, joining Gifts and Gold and shoe shop Stead and Simpson. Turners bookstore and antique dealers Deja New are also closing.

Coffee chain Caffe Nero recently opened a shop and electrical retailer QVS is returning after two years away.
