A 20mph speed limit is being expanded across the north of the borough.

The reduced speed limit was introduced by Croydon Council on Monday in hundreds on hundreds on streets.

Many residential roads in South Norwood, Selhurst, Bensham Manor, Thornton Heath and Upper Norwood will be covered by the restriction, apart from main through roads such as Whitehorse Lane and Beulah Hill.

The council plans to introduce 20mph limits, as well as recognition speed visors and electronic signs, across the borough by 2018.

It has divided the borough into five sectors and is to run a consultation in each.

The council said 20mph limits reduced the frequency and severity of accidents, cut congestion and pollution, and discourage the use of quiet streets as rat runs.

Councillor Stuart King, the council’s cabinet member for transport and the environment, said: “I’m glad we’re delivering on our 20mph manifesto pledge because it will keep residents safer and make our streets more enjoyable places to live.”
