Commuters have faced nightmare journeys this morning after a fire next to the railway track at Streatham station caused widespread delays.

The fire, which started shortly before 7.30am this morning, caused the power to fail at Streatham station. Almost every train was delayed or cancelled as a result, with many commuters left stuck on trains outside stations.

National Rail tweeted at 9.15am to say the fire had been extinguished and all lines were now reopened, but warned that delays and cancellations should still be expected.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said they had not been called, and that the fire was put out by staff at the station.

The disruption caused by the small fire has been felt across south London, with commuters taking to social media to vent their frustation.
