A charity based in Harpenden will be featured in the One Show's Rickshaw Challenge as part of this year's Children in Need.

The AT Society, who help people with the rare condition Ataxia-Telangiectasia, which severely affects co-ordination, speech and increases vulnerability to respiratory infections and cancer, supports one of the riders, Ebony Robinson, who is going on the 470 mile journey from Scotland to London.

At the age of three, Ebony, who lives in Bournemouth, was diagnosed with the condition.

On Friday, November 11, Ebony will be one of six young riders to work their way down Britain’s east coast, starting at the Scottish border town of Jedburgh and finishing in central London for the Rickshaw Challenge.

The annual effort will this year see the team pedalling down in rickshaws in a bid to cross the finish line on Friday, November 18, in time for the BBC Children in Need appeal show.

Ebony will be riding in the specially-adapted rickshaw in the name of the A-T Society, who are funded by Children in Need and have provided support and advice for the 18-year-old and her family since her diagnosis.

She said: “I’ve cycled to raise money before, including a ride along the Bournemouth seafront to fundraise for other children with life-limiting conditions, but never anything on this scale.

“I know it will be tough, but I’m really looking forward to pushing myself and showing everyone what I’m capable of.

“Knowing that the money will make such a big difference to other young people makes it all the better.”

A-T is degenerative, with life expectancy at just 26 years, and Ebony now finds it limits her independence, and the gradual loss of physical ability having left her often relying on her electric wheelchair.

To date the Rickshaw Challenge has raised more than £12million and Ebony and the other five young riders will deliver speeches to a live audience explaining their motivations for taking on the challenge this year.

Ebony’s story will also feature on The One Show on Wednesday.

Presenter Matt Baker, who will join the riders on the road, said: “Every year I am inspired by the incredible young people who take on the Rickshaw Challenge, and this year is no different.

“The six young riders in Team Rickshaw have faced major challenges in their lives already, but thanks to their charities they have been able to overcome so much; and now they feel ready to give back.

“We hope the public will rally behind them to help raise more money for BBC Children in Need. It really does make such a difference.”
