A conman has been jailed after duping two elderly Croydon woman into handing over their bank cards which he went on a spending spree with.

Hamit Hamit, 33, called his victims on the phone claiming to be from their banks.

He tricked them into giving him personal information such as their bank PINs.

Shortly after, he visited the women aged 82 and 83 at their homes pretending to be a courier He took their bank cards and spent thousands of pounds on expensive jewellery and electrical items.

Hamit, of no fixed address, was found guilty of eight counts of fraud by false representation which took place in April this year.

He was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to five years and four months in prison..

Detective Constable Jennifer Williams, from Croydon CID, said: “These are appalling crimes that target the most vulnerable members of our local community here in Croydon.

“The victims themselves have been left to feel fearful in their own homes and in the communities where they have spent their entire lives.

“They also feel that they are someway at fault for what has happened.

“I would encourage any victims of similar crimes to report these offences to police and also to stress to them that they are no way to blame for the actions of devious and manipulative individuals."
