A retired construction worker from New Addington who had contact with asbestos more than 30 years ago died from a disease linked with the carcinogenic substance, an inquest heard.

Peter Clarke, of Wyndham Close, died from mesothelioma - the disease linked to the deadly fibres given off the material, which was widely used in the construction industry until the mid-80s.

At an inquest into the 80-year-old's death, coroner Dr Roy Palmer said it could be more than 30 years before the effect on the lungs is detected.

Dr Palmer recorded Mr Clarke's death on April 18 as cardiac respiratory failure due to mesothelioma, which had been diagnosed two months earlier.
