Two permanent memorials are to be created in honour of the seven people who lost their lives in the Croydon tram tragedy.

Croydon Council said the memorials will be placed at two sites; one near Sandilands tram stop, where the vehicle derailed, and the other in New Addington.

The leader of the council Tony Newman said the authority will be asking the families of those affected for their views on the type of memorial they wish to be set up before making a decision.

But he added the two memorials, one of which will be in New Addington where five of those who died lived, would “100 per cent” be created.

Cllr Tony Newman said: “The council will of course support not just a memorial at Sandilands but on in New Addington as well.

“The family members and the local community, we will want to hear their views.

“But absolutely at this stage in the grieving process we don’t want to start to discuss this in more detail.

“The memorials will 100 per cent go ahead.”

A petition was launched by Croydon resident Andy Southern asking for the council and Transport for London to create a permanent tribute near the crash site, in Addiscombe Road.

Mr Southern said: “Many, many lives within the local community have been touched and sadly affected by the incident at Sandilands.

“It is only right that a permanent memorial is created nearby where Family, friends and further members of the public can come and pay their respect.”

Cllr Newman added that Croydon residents can take pride in how the community came together to offer condolences to those affected by the crash.

He said: “The events a week ago, it’s fair to say they hit the community right across Croydon. The community came together to stand with the victims.

“I think Croydon can take great pride in how everyone came together on the day, and in the days that followed, to offer their condolences to those worst affected.”

The authority has set up a fundraising page for the victims and families of those affected by the tragedy.  You can donate here.
