Residents have called on Croydon Council to improve road safety following a car crash in Shirley.

The car flipped onto its roof after it crashed in Bridle Road at about 6pm on Sunday, November 27.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A 25-year-old, who was driving the car, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking and driving away, drink driving, driving without insurance and dangerous driving.

“He remains in police custody.”

Bridle Road resident Ralph Longhurst, said: “A lot of cars crash in this road, the last one was about 10 days ago.

“Several neighbours have chased this up and we have said to the council something has had be done about the road for the past year, but nothing has happened yet.

“I would like to see speed cameras being put in place rather than speed bumps because they come down so fast it would act like a launch pad.”

The 55-year-old added: “I have lived here for about 20 years and there has been about three accidents this year and maybe 22 since I moved. Something needs to be done about it.”

A council spokesman said: "Over recent years we have upgraded the markings and signs in Bridle Road in response to local concerns, and will consult residents in the New Year to include it in our proposed borough-wide 20mph limit to improve safety for all Croydon road users.

"Although the council does not have the power to decide where cameras are installed, we have asked the police to monitor speeds along Bridle Road and would encourage residents to contact them if they are interested in setting up a community speed watch group."
