An elderly man who died in a flat fire on Monday evening in Waddon has been named as Khalid Nazir.

South London Coroner's Court confirmed that Mr Nazir had died after his first floor flat in Kemble Road caught fire.

Firefighters from Croydon, Wallington and Norbury fire stations had been called to the fire shortly after 7pm.

One neighbour said she had seen paramedics from London Ambulance Service trying to revive Mr Nazir outside his home, but he later died in hospital.

About half of the four-room flat in a converted terrance house was damaged by the fire, but the crews had the blaze under control by 7.42pm.

An investigation into the cause of the fire by London Fire Brigade is underway.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police confirmed a man in his 80s had died, but added that there was no evidence to suggest the fire was suspicious.

Mr Nazir's neighbour, who did not want to be named, said last night that the fire was "quite devastating for us all".

Another said what happened was a "tragedy", and that she had seen paramedics trying to revive Mr Nazir after he was pulled from the burning flat.

Several bouquets of flowers were laid outside the house last night.
