A teenager was killed on his moped just one month after his friend died in the Croydon tram crash, his family have said.

Daniel Webb, 18, died when his scooter collided with a minicab in Baston Road, Hayes, a few miles from his family home in Bromley.

The former Charles Darwin School pupil was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.30pm on Monday, December 5.

He was a friend of Dane Chinnery, 19, who was the youngest to die when a tram derailed near Sandilands tram stop in Croydon last month.

In a statement, Daniel’s parents said his close-knit circle of friends were already grief-stricken by the tragedy, and their son’s death was an added blow.

They said: “Daniel Webb, much loved son of Simon and Jakki and amazing brother to James and Adam, tragically died when riding his moped which collided with a car in Hayes on Monday.

“He brought so much joy and happiness to everyone. Family and friends are obviously devastated but are so grateful for the amazing love, strength and support being given to us.

On Mr Chinnery’s death, the family added: “A special mention for his long term, close circle of amazing friends who are continuing to suffer so much after the tragic loss of Dane a few weeks ago.”

Mr Chinnery, Crystal Palace fan, was the youngest of the seven who died after a tram derailed in Croydon on November 9

A classmate, who spoke at Mr Chinnery’s funeral, wrote on Facebook: “From never losing a friend to losing two of my best pals in a month is just unbelievable.

“It’s a cruel world. You are both together now angels. Look after each other like you always did.”

Sunil Chotai, head teacher of Charles Darwin, where Mr Webb studied until 2014, said: “Daniel who was only 18 years old was a popular and very well regarded student who is very fondly remembered by many staff and pupils.

“All of us, staff and pupils are still in shock; tragic news of this magnitude in the close knit community that is Biggin Hill always has the effect of putting our day to day concerns into a different perspective.”

The driver of the car, a white Toyota Auris mini-cab, stopped at the scene. He was not arrested and has been assisting officers with their inquiries.
